Laptop Adventures
So with the book closed on Divider, a couple people have asked what’s next. The notebook is part of the answer. Another part is playing open mics and posting demos on this site. A third part is a new recording setup.
Obviously, I want to go linux. But I actually want to go linux on a new laptop with a portable audio interface. I want to be able to work on music in a variety of locations. In fact, I’m in love with the idea of incorporating field recordings into my future projects.
But I also want to start recording live drums (the drums on Divider are pseudo-live), and the interfaces I’m looking at only have 2 inputs. So I’ve started asking around about this idea: whenever I need to record drums, I would hook up my new audio interface to my current desktop, letting me record from both the new interface and my current card. Thus, 4 inputs. I’ve been told this should work. It certainly seems to be the perfect solution.

What portable interface are you looking at?
I have an IBM R51, and I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a Tascam US-122 (http://www.tascam.com/Products/US-122.html). It has two phantom powered XLR ins, plus it’s got two 1/4″ inputs. I’m trying to figure out if those are usable simultaneously with the XLR.
Best of luck

Hey, that’s a pretty unit. Good price too. I’m gonna assume that the 1/4″s are just alternatives to the XLRs- so only 2 simultaneous inputs. That seems to be the case with the M-Audio Firewire 410, which I was looking at. Right now, I’m leaning toward a Digidesign MBox, but I’m going to investigate that Tascam box further. Thanks.

Hey, I have a month off, so if you’re interested in making part 4 another music video let me know and we can toss around some ideas.
…also, you ought to talk to Jeff Phurrough about some of these audio tools. He’s a kick ass resource for audio tool knowldege.
