But it sounds like you've got the basic idea - if you're gonna use fake drums, make them sound really fake. Go for the synthesized drum sounds and don't be afraid to program something that a drummer couldn't play. Lay out your basic pattern and then try putting weird sounds in the empty spaces. Though honestly, I don't have much of method. Sometimes I just randomly hit spots on the grid and see how it sounds.
